We Built A Wooden Planter Box
I was scrolling through my gallery the other night and found some pictures of the DIY wooden planter box we built a few years ago. I completely forgot that I had taken these pictures but I wanted to share them with you.
I genuinely feel like one of the best ways to grow vegetables that are safeguarded from environmental damage, pets, and plant disease is in isolated planter boxes.
The reason they’re so effective is because they provide complete control over what you grow in them.
You can choose the type and composition of soil added to them, where they’re situated, and how much sunshine they receive.

As you can see from the image above, we mounted this planter box onto three legs that were inserted into the ground. Like a tripod, they provided support and enough height to prevent my cats from getting inside them all the time.
To avoid rot, we lined the inside of the wooden box planter with plastic before adding the potting soil.

Over time, we added more planter boxes to the existing ones for smaller herbs and plants.
If you can get your hands on some strong wood, don’t hesitate, because these planters look good and work great for most types of edible plants and herbs.
You can grow the following in them:
- Lettuce
- Kale
- Spinach
- Cabbage
- Radish
- Beets
- Baby Potatoes
- Mint
- Corriander
- Thyme
- Spring Onion
- Chillies
- Peppers
- Egg Plants
- Strawberries
- Celery
I think we had these wooden planter boxes for years before they started to breakdown from the intense rain and wind we have in our climate.
With that being said, I hope that this little planter box idea inspires you to start or upgrade your own home garden.
